Dun-Rite Kitchens will soon be into its third decade of resurfacing Colorado kitchens. Our "claim to fame" is our ability to provide our customers with the look and feel of a new custom kitchen without the mess, hassle, time and expense of total kitchen replacement.
However, sometimes the concept and cost of replacement kitchens is a little confusing: Any more, one can get all new cabinets from a hardware store ("a big box store")
delivered to your driveway for as little as $2,000 to $4,000, because modern technology has made it easy to make cabinets quickly and cheaply. However, very often these cabinets use a particle board box covered in simulated wood grain plastic, and either a particle board door "shrink wrapped" in a plastic covering or a mass produced wood door. One can get new cabinets alright; but, one must also remember that the quality of today's mass produced cabinetry is usually not even close to that of the custom cabinets built years ago. And, once those cabinets are in the driveway, the work is just beginning: the old ones have to come out, the new ones have to be installed, countertops have to be addressed, plumbing and electrical considerations have to be met, floor lines usually don't match up so that floors have to be changed, etc. Oh, and of course there is painting, wallpapering, trim work, permits, inspections, and so on to be considered. So, now $2,000 to $4,000 worth of "new cabinets" has potentially cost many, many thousands of dollars to turn into a replacement kitchen. Yes, it's true...... it is a very common misconception that a kitchen can be replaced simply by replacing those old cabinet boxes.
Let's talk about replacement kitchen costs. Dating as far back as 1972 and even today, it has been said in publication after publication that the cost of a replacement kitchen mirrors that of a new car; that is, $4,000 to $7,000 in 1972 and $30,000 to $40,000 in more recent years. These figures will usually include the cost of solid wood cabinets made with real plywood boxes, solid hardwood face frames, and solid hardwood doors. Also included would be new counter tops, a new floor, painting and/or wallpaper, drywall repair or replacement, as well as electrical and plumbing considerations. All of these are necessary for a complete replacement kitchen project. These items, coupled with layout changes, are what brings the cost of replacement kitchens to the exorbitant cost levels mentioned above.
